My name is Keysy Gomez Mena and I am a student at New Britain High School. I'm Dominican and came to the United States when I was 12 years old. I've been living in New Britain for almost three years now and I am part of different programs and after school activities here at the high school. To name a few I am part of the health academy, marching band, and the National Honor Society.

​

I've worked as a lifeguard during the summer and I've also been working as a cashier for C-Town since July. In my free time I like to volunteer and spend time with my family and friends. I volunteered as a camp counselor and also volunteer every Sunday at the Salvation Army Church here in New Britain. 

 

Since taking science classes and CNA class at New Britain High School, I've developed a love for careers in the medical field, and decided I wanted to become a nursing major and pursue a career as a Neonatal nurse practitioner. I've applied to a lot of different colleges/universities and have been lucky enough to get accepted to all of them including University of Saint Joseph, CCSU, and UCONN.

I am a passionate student who works really hard in order to achieve the ultimate goal of becoming a nurse so that I can help change the lives of those who need it. This has been my dream since I was a little girl and I am grateful for this opportunity to apply to this scholarship program, which will put me a step closer to pursuing my career as a nurse. I believe that education should be accessible for those who are passionate which is why programs like this are so important. They give hope to students and encourages them, like myself, to keep going because it shows us that we are not alone. This scholarship program, along with others, have inspired me to create a way to help those students that seek financial assistance when it comes to education because they can't afford it and I wouldn't want someone who wants to make a change and get a higher education be stopped because of their financial need.
